Sam's Flashback

Sam’s Flashback

Back, way back, when I was in the army, I had a puppy named Freda. She soon grew into a big dog. I feel as if it was yesterday, what a terrible day.

We were in the trenches, then I heard someone shout “Eh, Why are you standing up there, you could easily ge-” BANG! I heard someone fire their gun. Freda started whimpering. I told her “everything will be okay” and we went up to investigate.

We crawled over to where the big ‘Bang’ was, we saw one of our men laying dead in a trench, with a hole in his head. I wasn’t really surprised that someone died, but the enemy came up to the trench and shot him up close. I took a closer look at his face, it turned out that he was one of my close friends. I then became depressed I looked at Freda and remembered the promise I gave to Lucy.

I felt something on the back of my head. Someone started talking in a foreign language. I didn’t come out of the trench un-armed, I took my gun out of its holster. BANG! Right in the stomach . He died. The sun had gone down a while later.

It seemed that the only people who were firing guns on that day were me and the Nazi. I returned to my trench and slept with Freda by my side.

In class our teacher read us a book called the Anzac Puppy by Peter Millet, and Illustrations by Trish Bowles. We were told to write down a flashback from one of the characters perspectives. I chose Sam the Soldier because I wanted to write about one of his days in war. W.A.L.T: Write a flashback from a different perspective and use show not tell.
